Steve,

Thank you so much for the advice at your Dallas clinic Monday.  Linda and I really enjoyed our sets with you.  She is so fired up, and that makes me happy.   I am so thankful again for the help with my skiing.  I can,t wait to get rid of this “boat ore”.   We laughed a bunch about that.

Thanks again,

Trophy Lakes: Rejuvenated

Contrary to popular belief, Trophy Lakes has not been sold, has not been turned into condominiums and certainly has not dried up.  In fact, Trophy remains one of the premier water-ski destinations on the planet.  With it's gorgeous landscape, countless on-site cross-training options, an 18 hole disc golf course, not to mention having Charleston as it's backdrop, it's no wonder why this ski site continues to be the Mecca for watersports enthusiasts and their families.

Once you drive in the gate, the bumpy gravel road encourages you to take it slow and immerse yourself in the landscape which can't help but make you forget all about the stress and rigors of the "real world".  And that's exactly the atmosphere that Matt DuBon (Head of Operations @ Trophy Lakes) is aiming for.  "We want everyone whether it be Andy Mapple, or a family wanting their youngest to learn to kneeboard, to feel like they can spend the entire day and ski at their leisure."
This past winter Trophy Lakes has undergone a serious overhaul in an effort to bring back the luster and skier friendly atmosphere Trophy was known for.  Since teaming up with Carolina MasterCraft and Carolina Watersports, Trophy has now become a one stop shop for all your watersports needs.  You can now find everything from your favorite MasterCraft boats (including the new Saltwater Series) to all of the newest technology from companies like, Radar and Ronix, HO and Hyperlite, Connelly and D3.   With a fully stocked proshop, the staff's highest priority is Customer Service which is solely based around, "The Golden Rule."  No matter how big or small your issue may be, the staff at Carolina Watersports will treat you the way they'd expect to be treated from a world class watersports dealer.
Over the past few years Trophy has become a breeding ground for up and coming skiers.  With their new hybrid styles of coaching, they're all about efficient skiing; they don't claim any one particular style.  "We try and take all of the best aspects of your favorite pro skiers and blend them into your own personalized style."  They aim to teach our youth a fun and rewarding respect for our sport and for the more "experienced" skier, they are all about efficiency and maximizing your potential so that you can stay on the water for another 20+ years.

With MasterCraft bringing the Pro Tour back to Trophy this August, it's certainly not out of the question to see yet another world record.  We're all glad to see that Trophy is still alive and kicking, and hopefully this new staff will bring the "Magic" back to the glassy waters of Trophy Lakes.

MALIBU RECALL NOTICE

http://www.themalibucrew.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=15745  Last summer, we had a problem similar to this on a 2007 Malibu when the pin that the transmission cable attaches to at the transmission fell out with a child directly in our boat's path.  Luckily, nothing happened!  Ski safe!

HERE'S THE RECALL NOTICE

Bulletin ID: SB062608-9
Date: 6/26/2008
Bulletin No: 9
Affected Models: All 2008 Models Except Ride Series, Response and Response LX
Subject: ZF Ski Command potential loss of shifting capabilities

Condition:

ZF Marine has discovered the ZF throttle and shifter control has the potential to fail creating a loss of shifting capabilities in the forward or reverse direction in all 2008 model boats excluding the Ride series, Response and Response LX.

Action Required:

While the failure rate has been determined to be less than 2 percent, Malibu Boats must insist that any boat using the 2008 shift by wire system should not be used until the unit has been repaired or replaced by a certified Malibu technician. ZF Marine and Malibu Boats will be utilizing their entire team of technicians for this component recall and we anticipate a resolution by 4th of July weekend.

TIGER WOODS

I was watching TV about a week ago when the announcer came on and told the world that Tiger Woods would be out for the rest of the year due to an upcoming knee surgery.  He then went on to show the videos of Tiger grimacing in pain as his body torqued and twisted as his golf club drove the ball with incredible accuracy towards it’s final destination and his ultimate triumph, not over only his friends, but over himself at the US Open.  Tiger played on, knowing that each and every time his club face made contact; his body would again be wracked with unbearable pain.  Yet with each shot doing more and more damage, Tiger played on.  Tiger played on in such a manner that most of the world knew not that an injured and maimed Tiger had played and won.  Tiger played on with an inner strength and conviction that we rarely have the opportunity to witness.  This win of Tigers should remind us of the great dedication and commitment required to excel to greatness in any endeavor we choose in our lives, be it golf, family, business, skiing, etc., etc...  When the going gets tough, we all need to remember how the Tiger wrestled victory out of almost certain defeat and the pain and sacrifice it takes to join the Tiger in the winner’s circle.

THE EARTH IS FLAT (2)

Many years ago, back in the days before Christopher Columbus, most thought the Earth was flat as to express views otherwise was quite dangerous.  At the time, this was the norm in thinking and well accepted even though it was far from the truth.  Today’s skiing is in the same boat, as the norm and the reality are again butting heads.  Accepted as the norm are the traditional waterskiing styles of the past.  Styles that have progressed from the beginning based upon feel and athletic ability.  Quickly becoming the reality are the bio-mechanical styles  derived from years on the snow ski slopes and computer labs of many government as well as privately funded organizations.  Marcus Brown states;  “I believe I ski/coach the correct technique, mechanics and way to ski, and that there is only one "correct" explanation for the most efficient mechanics thru the slalom course”. Marcus soon after stated “I believe 90% of the elite skiers (all disciplines included) do not understand how I ski and what I am trying to achieve”.  These statements reflect the views of one of the Christopher Columbus’s of our time.  One of the enlighten who can see through the darkness of the past and into the shining lights of the future.  “If we keep doing what we’re doing we’ll keep getting what we’re getting”!   I knew the Earth was flat for many years until one day, one of my students, Chris Rossi showed me differently.  He was talking in terms I never heard and doing movements that seemingly made no sense.  Then I became aware of Jamie Beauchesne, Terri Winter, Marcus Brown, Will Asher, Thomas Moore, Jason McClintock, Karina Nowlan, David Miller and countless others skiing this new style .  All these skiers are using bio-mechanics as their baseline and all of these skiers have a lot of progression ahead of their already awesome scores.  These are the next generation of the greats of our sport.  Patti and I have spent many hours with the next generation of waterski coaches.  We’ve been coached by those trained in bio-mechanics.  Coaches like Chris Rossi and Matt Rini.  Today, there are many among us that still believe the world is flat.  They still teach the old and try to suppress the new.  This suppression comes from a lack of understanding and knowledge.  For only without an understanding of what the bio-mechanical coaches are teaching and what the bio-mechanical skiers are skiing, can one still believe, THE EARTH IS FLAT!

Support The Clean Boating Act

The Clean Boating Act has now passed out of both Senate and House Committees and we need to rush to get it voted on before Sept. 2008.  The bill was sponsored by Bill Nelson and has 34 cosponsors.  Senator Martinez is not yet a cosponsor of this bill-he introduced the Recreational Boating Act last year, but that legislation is now at the end of its road.  Having Senator Martinez cosponsor S. 2766 (Clean Boating Act) would help us with some potential hurdles.      A quick telephone call from you to his local Tampa Office would go a long way.  You'll very likely just leave a message, but that message will get to Senator Martinez's State Director Kevin Doyle by the end of this week.  They need to hear from constituents and we think you can make a difference. Leave message for: Kevin Doyle Sen. Martinez's State Director. Phone:  (813) 207-0509  Issue: Recreational Boat Permits / Cosponsor Clean Boating Act.  Introduce yourself, the name of your company, what you manufacture, where you are based and how many employees you have, etc.    Suggestions on what to mention when you call: I just wanted to call to thank Senator Martinez for his legislative efforts to prevent a new onerous EPA regulation on recreational boaters that will really hurt the marine industry in Florida because it will drive people away from boating. We appreciate that Senator Martinez introduced the Recreational Boating Act of 2007, and now I hope he can co-sponsor S. 2766, the Clean Boating Act of 2008.    This bill has 35 bipartisan cosponsors, and it would be really helpful to the bill's passage if Senator Martinez would co-sponsor it and urge for its fast passage on behalf of my company, employees and the entire FL recreational marine industry and boaters.  His absence from this group of boating advocates is becoming noticeable since Florida is the Nation's number 1 boating state and has a multi-billion dollar recreational marine industry.    The Clean Boating Act is a consensus, bipartisan bill that needs to-and can-get passed by the end of the summer.  We have until September of this year to prevent onerous new regulations on all recreational boaters.  The Clean Boating Act has now passed out of Committee in the House and Senate.  This is the bill that is moving and we would appreciate Senator Martinez's support of S. 2766.  The bill exempts all recreational boats and small charter fishing boats from this EPA regulation.  It is a simple bill and my company and my employees would really appreciate it if Senator Martinez would cosponsor it on behalf of the Florida marine industry and the 1 million Florida boaters.

(Rather than risking enormous fines and spending more of your hard earned money paying for "discharge permits", find out where your Senators stand on this issue and write them NOW if they're sitting on the fence or in favor of passing this insane legislation.  Find out where the stand here;  http://www.boattest.com/Resources/view_news.aspx?NewsID=1014 )

Steve,

As you know, I have been using the Slot Fin with Mini Wing on every ski I've owned for years now. This includes the Goode 9400, D-3 X5, Monza, and my current Goode 9800. I've been so happy with the performance with the 9800 with the Slot Fin that I have been reluctant to make any changes to it. After having a SPEED Slot Fin in my closet for 3 months I finally bolted it on today. All I can say is FANTASTIC!! Ran right up the rope from 28 to deep 38 Off.  Actually made up ground after being late a couple of times. I never would have thought there would be that much difference between the regular Slot Fin and the SPEED Slot Fin, but I could immediately feel the difference in the first pass. Thanks again for a great product. The craftsmanship is excellent and the performance spectacular......ED JOHNSON  Dec 14, 2007

FIN DEPTH WITHOUT WING REMOVAL!
NOW SHIPPING THE SPEED PRECISION AND SPEED SLOTFINS

INTRODUCING OUR NEW "SPEED SLOTFIN"

Our new "SPEED SLOTFIN" is designed to provide far less drag than any other fin/wing combination on the market by eliminating the attachment plates on each side of the wing.  I started with our time proven, record setting SLOTFIN and MINI WING which have been slowly evolving for well over 20 years.  Since I always recommend our Mini Wing with this fin set at 9 degrees with the fin set at 7.116 - 2.5605 and 7.865 DFT, the SPEED SLOTFIN was the obvious next step.   After over a year of testing, we're now putting it on the market.   The "SPEED SLOTFIN" comes with the "Mini Wing" permanently attached at 9 degrees.  There is no adjustability of the wing.  Removing the side plates reduces parasitic drag from  the wing by  100%..  More speed means less effort while skiing and the ability to recover from mistakes you normally could not.  $129.99 delivered in the USA!   /  $144.99 outside the USA.

"SPEED PRECISION FIN"

We have begun production on the SPEED PRECISION FIN.   It is the standard round shaped fin found on the GOODE as well as many other production skis.  It comes with the same size wing as the GOODE, permanently mounted at 9 degrees, wing down or in the lower position.   This configuration eliminates roughly 300/1000ths x 375/1000ths of pure parasitic drag and destabilizing factors.   $129.99 delivered in the USA!  /  $144.99 outside the USA.

"PRECISION DEPTH GAUGE"

We developed this gauge to measure the fin depth on our SPEED PRECISION FINS because the wing is not removable.  What we found is that we can use this on any ski with an adjustable wing.  Now you can measure your fin depth without touching your wing!  Talk about saving time!  Talk about leaving a fin and wing alone that's working awesome.  It's a totally accurate and non-invasive measuring tool that you will want in your tool box!   $36.95 with free shipping!

YOU MUST HAVE ONE OF THESE GAUGES WHEN YOU PURCHASE A SPEED PRECISION FIN.  BUY BOTH FOR $159.99

There is some concern about not being able to adjust the wing.  Increasing wing angle has the same effect as adding tip and decreasing wing angle does the opposite.  When you adjust your fin, the wing moves in the exact same direction as that which you are hoping to accomplish.  Actually, you will need to raise or lower the front or rear of your fin approximately 200/1000ths to change the wing angle by 1 degree so it's really not a factor.  By decreasing drag, you increase the efficiency and speed of your ski.  This means less effort for the same result or the same effort equates to an earlier path.  Increased speed means you can survive more mistakes.  The future has arrived and it's time to hop on board!

WHY A SPEED FIN?

Speed fins have a fixed wing which eliminates the upright plates that hold the wing on.  These plates can be 300/1000ths thick.  Since all they do is hold the wing on, we fixed the wing at 9 degrees.  Doing so eliminated all of the parasitic drag from the wings.  All that's left is pure function and performance.  The Speed Fin is noticeably faster.  So much so that you will need to add about 12/1000ths tip leaving your depth and distance from tail the same.  Doing this will put more ski in the water, more edge in the water.  More edge in the water equals better edging which equals more efficiency!  Thus more edge in the water while accelerating and more edge in the water whilst decelerating.  A marriage made in water-ski heaven!   Supply limited!

SPEEDFIN THEORY

I have been making fins since the late 1970's.  I have been thinking about the Speed Fins for quite a while but technology and a reliable machine shop held me back.  We started testing these fins in the winter of 2006 so we had a year under our belts by the time they were introduced.  At first, we tested the Speed SlotFin because of the wing location, which is behind the deepest point on the fin, thus allowing the use of a caliper when measuring depth.  I could not figure out how to measure fin depth without removing the wing on a standard fin until I met Les Bender, a tool and die maker who was in my office one day buying a ski.  I showed him the Speed Fin concept and explained the problem with not being able to measure fin depth without removing the wing.  He immediately said, "No problem" and went on to describe the Speed Gauge.  His insight helped bring forth the standard shape, Speed Fins.

The theory behind the Speed Fin is this; I have been around the world setting up skis.  I have set up thousands of skis and worked with thousands of skiers.  A common denominator I find is setting up the fin and wing to exact factory specs (in the case of all Goode Skis and my SlotFins).  Doing this takes all the guess work out of fin setup and allows the skier to move on to the next phase of tuning, moving the bindings to the places where the ski works best.  This being said, a Goode is setup to 6.872 - 2.449 and .690 with the wing down (blades below the screws) at 9 degrees and my SlotFin at 7.116 - 2.5605 and 7.865 tip to tail with the Mini Wing down at 9 degrees.  I rarely adjust the wing on a standard (Goode) fin and never on the SlotFin.  I reasoned that if I never adjusted the wing, I did not need the drag that comes from the attachment plates.  On a standard wing, the attachment plates can run 300/1000ths of an inch in thickness.  This 300/1000ths was only needed to attach the wings but since I didn't need to adjust them, these attachment plates represented nothing but pure DRAG.  I asked my machinist (and skier) Dennis Chambon if he could make some fins with non adjustable, built in wings, for testing.  Dennis gladly obliged and we started testing.  Dennis kept refining these fins until we introduced them in the spring of 2007.

As for adjusting wing angle, consider this; adding wing angle does the same thing as adding tip or increasing the length of the fin and decreasing wing angle does the same as decreasing tip.  They both work together so if a skier is concerned about the wing angle, they can just add or decrease tip.  Since the Speed Fins are faster, we have found the need to run about 10/1000ths more tip to make up for the elimination of the wedge effect.  Wedge effect?  What is “wedge effect” you ask?  Years ago someone came out with a “wedge wing”  which rather being a thin wing, it looked like mini doorstop attached to each side of the fin which was about 3/8” thick at the rear on each side, 3/4” total for both sides.  The result of this was the lower wedge would push the tail of the ski up in the turns, making the tail blow out.  By pushing up the tail, it was also driving in the tip.  If you look at all of the manufacturers wings on the market, you’ll see a wedge about 150/1000ths thick on the front of every one.  This wedge not only creates drag, it also lifts the tail and drives in the tip.  By removing this wedge, we were able to allow the tip to ride higher and tail to ride deeper.  The only problem was that the ski was so fast; we could not keep the rope tight in the turns.  To do this we needed to add about 10/1000ths tip.  This practice uses the edges of the ski, not the drag of the attachment plates on the wing to achieve turning speed.

We currently build our SlotFin - Mini Wing and an exact copy of the Goode standard fin with their size wing set at 9 degrees with the Speed Fin designation.  We are working on copies of the other manufacturer’s exact fin and wing shapes and will be introducing them as they become available.  Retail price for any of the Speed Fins is $129.99, the Speed Gauge is $36.95 or you can buy both for $159.99

Move binding(s) before deviating from these numbers. Moving bindings forward is like adding tip.

Last summer I skied Denver after skiing the hot Florida water.  On my I first set there, I was two passes down in performance.  For the second set, I moved my fin back 25/1000ths and regained a pass and a half in really rough conditions.  While skiing in Georgia on a shallow, muddy lake, my first set again was a disaster.  For the second set, I moved my fin back 52/1000ths and again skied much, much better.

While skiing in Kentucky on a muddy lake, I moved the fin back 30/1000ths and again had better results.  If you have two variables such as cold water and muddy, double the movement.  For three variables, triple it.  Get a TDS meter and a thermometer and keep track of your skiing results along with the TDS and Temp.  When skiing at other facilities check the TDS, Temp and Depth and hypothecate what new settings you think will work.  Try your first set at your normal numbers and your second set at the hypothetical numbers and let me know the results!

STANDARD FIN SET-UP FOR GOODE'S; Set this fin at 6.994 (with the caliper tips) 6.872 with one of my calibrated calipers.

LENGTH 6.872 (6.994 with the tips)
DEPTH 2.449
DISTANCE FROM TAIL .703 From the Tail (8.153 with my calibrated calipers) or 8.248 with my block caliper.

Wing down below the screws at  9 Degrees to start.  Add or decrease wing angle, and/or move binding(s) before deviating from these numbers.   Adding wing angle is like adding tip.  Moving bindings forward is like adding tip.

LOOK AT THE SPACE BETWEEN THE STRAIGHT EDGE AND THE BACK OF THE FIN
A GOODE ANGLE GAUGE SHOULD SLIDE INTO THIS GAP TO GET TO THE APPROXIMATE DISTANCE FROM TAIL. TO GET IT EXACT, USE MY CALIBRATED CALIPERS.
